A Place that Cares
“Our vision is to create a place where residents are happier and healthier. People’s life expectancy is no less than anywhere else, and people are able to access the health care they need.”
The three main aims of the New Deal Programme in terms of improving health are to:
- Increase life expectancy
- Reduce life-limiting illness
- Improve child health
A range of projects have been set up to achieve these aims and the programme is closely working with healthcare professionals both on the 3 Estates and elsewhere in Birmingham.
Projects
FoodNet
From 01.07.2004 to 31.03.2010
Funding: £787,000
FoodNet has recruited a number of local residents to run healthy eating initiatives across the 3 Estates, including:
- “Five-a-Day” briefings to promote eating more fruit and vegetables, and funding free fruit for primary school children.
- Face Fruit training. This is a training programme for residents to enable them to deliver fun “five-a-day” teaching sessions to primary school children.
- This programme is delivered by the charity CSV Environment. It enables schoolchildren to grow their own vegetables, then harvest them at the end of term and cook a meal.
- Size Down. Courses in weight management are run at Cadbury College Learning Centre.
