A Place to Learn

“Our vision is to create a place where people feel valued, understand their potential and whose learning achievements are optimised, recognised and celebrated, so that they approach their lives with confidence and with the desire and the tools to succeed.”

New Deal for Communities’ Education projects are firmly geared towards partnership working.

A new extension to Hawkesley Community Centre, in Edgewood Road, was funded by NDC and other partners, and delivered by Birmingham City Council’s arts project, Anim8.

The programme has contributed to the Collaborative Partnership at Kings Norton High School, which was put in place to improve the school’s performance. In 2005, pupils achieved impressive results at GCSE level due, in part, to measures put in place by the Partnership.

In 2006, the programme will help take forward plans for Extended Provision in the area. This will ensure parents and carers can take advantage of childcare and educational facilities beyond school hours, every day of the week.

Projects

Youth Strategy Phase 2

From 25.06.2009 to 01.01.1970

The Youth Strategy Phase II project will build on the Youth Strategy Project (418) named 'Three Estates Youth Strategy: B Inspired, B involved, B Young' project in two ways. Firstly it will enable the continued participation of young people in the New Deal Programme through further support and development of the Youth Forum. Secondly it will facilitate the delivery of those recommendations from the 3 Estates Youth Strategy which do not require a significant financial investment from the New Deal Programme as they will become self                                        sustaining following a period of community development work, or become mainstreamed by current service providers if successful.

The Youth Strategy Phase II project undertakes 6 key ctivities. Namely;

1. 3 Estates Youth Forum - Further support and development
2. Diversionary Activities - Develop Activities
3. Young Parents Group - Development
4. Hear by Rights - Action Planning and Implementation
5. Young People's Sexual Health Services - Promotion through Outreach and detached work.
6. Rewind Programme.

Supporting Early years and Primary Attainment

From 25.06.2009 to 01.01.1970

The project has been developed to address the need identified from the overall educational performance at primary level of children attending the schools on the 3 estates. The response has been developed by the Education Action Zone in consultation with colleagues within the LA and local schools.

The project will deliver three activities aimed at raising attainment amongst the pupils attending the 3 Estates schools and raising the educational profile of the schools amongst the residents. The specific area of activities are;

1) The development of a fully integrated learning partnership amongst the schools on the 3 Estates. Activity One - Provision of Peripatetic Teaching Support to enable teaching staff to contribute fully to the development of an intergrated learning partnership across the 3 primary schools on the 3 estates.

2) Assessing the issue of very low standards in speaking and listening when children enter Key Stage One. Activity Two - Specialist peech and language support to Early Years Practitioners. This support comes from the provision of a Speech Therapist and a communication and language specialist.

3) Developing the leadership skills of key personnel within the 3 primary schools on the 3 estates. Activity Three - Additional Middle Management Support to provide extra in-school support to middle managers of the 3 primary schools.
